Launch a startup derivative to take advantage of popularity: DigPicz

In the last few days I have been busy thinking about and discussing some projects, including investments in web 2.0 sites. There is something I wanna share with you today:

starting a startup that is a derivative of a well known site might turn out to be an excellent idea

Some time ago I have been positively impressioned by companies that allow to improve transport of items bought on ebay, even though they have formally nothing to do with EBay. Today I have heard about a startup that will probably benefit from the popularity of Digg, which is called DigPicz.

Basically it’s a Digg like site that looks like Digg, but focuses on pictures. It is interesting to notice that this happened a month before Digg pictures section is to be launched. Rarely do I praise clones but this one is a kind of derivative. It’s not a copy of something, it’s a different way of showing content.

In my opinion DiggPicz is not perfect from a purely technical point of view, but it is still competitive. I am not sure it will last for more than a year, but right now it’s ok. I would definitely spend a couple of minutes a day on it.

p.s. by the way there is something called RedditMedia just in case you are allergic to Digg

I agree, it’s not perfect from technical point of view because I had to generate the pages statically to sustain the expected digg effect. Instead of pages being generated as requested, they are pre-compiled (or cached) so they were served as fast as possible!

If you noticed, I wrote how the page was created and I released full source code of the site generator program.

Also I just wrote a post about digpicz visitor statistics. According to statcounter.com in the first day it had been visited by 100′727 unique visitors. During two days it has been online 130′848 uniques visited 265′836 pages :)

    Pretty impressive :)
