If you are looking for a very good ping service try Pingoat….
“Pingoat is a service that pings or notifies a number of services that keep track of weblogs and publish them. By pinging, you let the services know that your blog has been updated and hence, they crawl and index your site, publishing your blog contents, thus increasing your blog’s popularity”.

Some technical details: “Pingoat employs the XML_RPC method for pinging the target servers. Unline the traditional pinging, pinging a weblog service is different. An XML_RPC ping is usually a string in the xml format, which holds the data to be delivered. When it comes to blog pinging, the method webLogupdates.ping is employed, along with other custom methods.
Pingoat also supports on-the-fly generation of sitemaps with simultaneous upload to ftp server and ping “.

There is very little to say on this topic… simply try to use it and compare it to other similar services like Pingomatic…
