Social news sites such as Digg, Netscape, Fark, etc. are said to be losing momentum

In the last few weeks I have often talked about a problem that is very common in the industry. There is something I would call the company life cycle. After a year or two of this cycle what you observe is that companies can’t keep growing as fast as they did before.

I have carried out an analysis about this phenomenon and what I got is a confirmation of my opinion.

Have a look at this chart:

There is no doubt that is still the leader in the industry, but the trend is either steady or declining for all the sites.

In the last few months I couldn’t find any sites that could be good alternatives for those listed above.

My forecast is that each of those site will lose between 15-20% of users within a year. Profits will be lower than expected for sure, so if you are planning to take over , Netscape, or any other such site be careful.

Social networking is sliding into social bookmarking. Hence, less of a need to congregate at these sites.

Social networks are exploding while these hubs decline. Just one more stat to show that the future is in networks.
