Startup failure despite media coverage and good ideas. A story to keep in mind.

Last year I have heard thousands of people saying we have got the new big thing on the net. What I said in October 2006 was: “guys calm down, it’s not gonna last forever”. A year later I am here to say that I was right, AlumWire is completely down.

imsdWhat makes me really laugh is that July 25 you could still find articles such as: link. I can’t imagine such a site having almost no traffic. That’s exactly the way it is.

Conclusions:

1. media coverage is not enough to launch and mantain a startup

It doesn’t matter how many times the big guys such as CNet or BusinessWeek discuss your company. People need to be interested in it. Why do people use Digg or Skype? Because they are free, easy to use and useful. No other reason.

2. having good ideas is just step one

I remember W. Churchill saying something similar, and that’s something to keep in mind. Immanuel Kant was a great philosopher, but he spent his whole life i his home town. Is that the way you want to live?

3. TRAFFIC is the KING. You don’t need to have the best site, what matters is to have an audience.

No need to comment. Users are readers and customers. Any kind of media or business model is based on the assumption you have an audience.

    that’s not exactly true. You need maedia coverage and ads in the long run, but quality products and services are even more important.
