Web 2.0 trends: startups will rely more and more on crowdsourcing

In the last few months I have observed few interesting tendencies that seem to characterize Web 2.0. First of all the number of applications that are launched every day seems to have tripled since the beginning of the century. Second, only 20% of all of them are able to generate 80% of profits (and maybe even more than 80%). Third, thekey to develop succesfull startups is: crowdsourcing.
It is out of the scope of this blog to describe what crowsourcing is so let me provide a standard definition of it:
Crowdsourcing is a neologism for the act of taking a job traditionally performed by an employee or contractor, and outsourcing it to an undefined, generally large group of people, in the form of an open call. For example, the public may be invited to develop a new technology, carry out a design task, refine an algorithm or help analyze large amounts of data.
I believe that startups will rely more and more on clients/users to develop new business.
Social applications are the first step towards new business models. What I can’t still understand about the stage of the Web we are in, is why so few people are able to develop profitable business models. It seems that there is a gap between engineers and economists, which we have discussed some time ago on businesshackers.
My prediction for the nearest future is that only 2-3% of startups will succeed. I hope you guys will be in charge of some of them.

You should read Wire to have an idea about it. It’s definitely something to read about.
I believe 2-3% is pessimistic. That’s probably the percentage of startups that will ultimately make their founders rich and famous. I figure a lot of startups will exit modestly and make their founders more money than they would have made working for big companies.
